Cleaning House
Akasha on Nov 14th 2007
Phew, this week has been busy. Apart from today… I took the day off. However, that didn’t stop me from working. This weekend is my birthday weekend and I’ve invited a few friends from out of town to come celebrate with me. Daniela and Melba, my girlfriends from university, will be staying the night. Since this house is a perfect disaster on a good day my mom and I have been overhauling. On the weekend G. and I gave the washroom and my bedroom a good scrubbing. My mom has taken the kitchen to task while I’m steadily working on the guest bedrooms and the study. The study is finally coming together but the guest bedrooms are still looking pretty gross. My cats enjoy sleeping in there as no one usually goes inside.
The problem with that is Melba is allergic to cats. So basically, I have to scrub from top to bottom so she doesn’t asphyxiate in her sleep. Plus, the extra bed isn’t set up so we need to do that. On top of that, all of the linen needs washing! I made a ginormous list and pretty much nothing has been scratched off, lol. At this rate? We’ll probably be ready for Christmas!
We’ll make it, though. I’ll work all Saturday morning if I need to!
In other news, I’m getting into the Christmas spirit! I’ve started making my Christmas cards for this year. Hopefully they’ll be ready for sending by December 1st. It’s a pretty ambitious deadline but hopefully it’ll spark the fire under my ass that I need to get a move on. Oh, and if you want a card from me, please send me an email with your address!
Finally, I’m going to end this post with a good, old-fashioned Christmas meme that has been stolen from Belewien!
1. Eggnog or Hot Chocolate?
Nog all the way. Hot Chocolate’s nice but when there’s Nog in the house you can’t keep my greedy little paws off of it.
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Wait, you’re telling me some people can’t even wrap their presents? That’s ridiculous. Santa’s always wrapped ours.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
Whatever’s in the bin, actually. I think we might have both.
4. Do you hang mistletoe?
No, but I was looking at mistletoe at Michaels the other day…
5. When do you put up your decorations?
Usually when my parents have gotten sick of my nagging. However, we do put the door ornament up fairly early. The lights on the house also stay on year round. Yes, we’re that family.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish?
Polish salatka (pronounced sa-wat-ka). It rarely appears outside of Christmas and Easter so it’s always a treat to have it.
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child:
Looking for the first star in the sky on Christmas Eve. It’s a clever ploy to get children to look the other way while you put the presents under the tree. Poles open presents on Christmas Eve.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I honestly can’t remember. It obviously didn’t scar me or anything since I don’t remember when I stopped believing in Santa!
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
Heck, we open them all!
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?
It’s now my niece and nephew’s job to decorate the tree. I help with some of the hard to reach spots. It’s always a real tree, though!
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
I like the idea of snow. How’s that?
12. Can you ice skate?
I can but I have weak ankles.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
My dad once bought me this really cheap coin bank that he had obviously picked up like three hours ago but he spent a lot of time trying to wrap it and it still sticks in my mind. For some reason I loved the idea that he wrapped it himself more than I did the actual bank. However, I still have that bank!
14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Family, friends and foooooooood.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
My mom’s poppyseed cake is excellent.
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Sharing oplatek (pronounced op-wha-tek) with the family.
17. What tops your tree?
This big angel my parents won as a door prize one year, lol.
18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving?
I enjoy both a lot. I like shopping and wrapping gifts. It can get tedious when you’ve got like twenty presents to wrap (I usually do my mom’s and dad’s as well) but it’s worth it.
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song?
The First Noel
20. Candy Canes?
Peppermint is not my favourite but I like the other flavours!
21. Do you feel Christmas is too commercialized?
Well, yes.
22. Real tree or artificial?
Real.
23. Do you put lights up on the outside of your house?
Every year!
24. Do you do a Christmas Dinner or Supper and who cooks?
The family does a Christmas dinner. My mom is the one who normally cooks it. I think she’d get offended if any one of us tried to take the spot.
25. Is your family the everyone unwraps gifts at once sort or do you do it one gift at a time as the others watch?
The kids try and hand out presents to each of us but it basically melts into a free for all at some point.
26. Do your pets share in the festivities?
Nope, my dog’s pretty old. She’s not a fan of loud noises and screaming children.
