Rabbits and Stress Go Hand in Hand
Olga on Dec 20th 2007
Three days left until I leave for Central America. Things aren’t going as swimmingly as possible. Right now I’m trying to just breathe cause if I don’t I’m liable to rip out hair or scream or something. Too much to do and I feel like I’m not getting anything accomplished. Not even my million and one To Do lists are helping me feel any more organized.
Part of the problem is that I’ve got a mini-emergency on my hands. My bunny, Diefenbaker, is injured.
Three nights ago I let the bunnies out to do some bonding in my room thinking it would be ok while I wrapped presents. The night before I did the exact same thing and it went swimmingly. I have the photos to prove it! I didn’t think anything bad would happen but apparently something happened beneath the bed that made them want to fight. I managed to pull them apart rather quickly.
Coleslaw is fine. Just dandy. Nothing broken, not even a scratch on his head. Two nights ago I noticed that Diefo wasn’t looking to good, though. He wasn’t moving much and when I opened his hutch so he could play around my room (alone) he didn’t bother coming out. I got worried and decided to go to the vet yesterday morning. The doctor couldn’t find any broken bones so he assumed it was just sore muscles and stress from the fight. He gave me some anti-inflammatory medicine and sent me on my way. He did mention, though, that it could possibly be a dislocated hip. Seeing as he wasn’t worried, though, I decided not to worry either. I assumed everything would be fine.
Well, after I came home from work yesterday I noticed he wasn’t doing much better than he was the previous day. In fact, he looked a little worse. His food hadn’t been touched, it looked like he hadn’t eaten his cecals, and when I gave him some lettuce I became alarmed. He appeared to want to eat the lettuce but after taking a few bites he stumbled and couldn’t seem to find it again or perhaps didn’t have the energy to go back to the leaf. When he became startled he hopped towards the corner of the hutch and knocked into it.
This is not the behaviour of a healthy bunny!
G. convinced me that I should go back to the vet this morning and so I’ve taken him in again. He’s a very unstable bunny at this moment, even after I gave him his anti-inflammatory meds. I’m worried that he’s got a dislocated hip which might require surgery.
I’m trying not to blame myself for this because I let them play together. Frankly, this was not something that I could have foreseen. I thought I was acting under the best judgment; sometimes bunnies just get into tiffs. There’s nothing I can do about that. Hopefully, though the doctor will be able to fix Diefo up well enough so that he won’t be in any pain for the next three weeks. I’ve found an experienced bunny-sitter for him while I’m gone, thankfully. If he’s going to require mucho attention for the next while he’ll certainly get it from her.
I sure wish it hadn’t happened, though!
